this is wlwt news 5 today. lisa: outside live on your friday morning, some flurries on and off, but nothing to put a damper on your friday war your morning commute and that is the good news. i' m lisa cooney. mark: and i' m mark hayes. i think one of our viewers described them as dip-n-dots. randi: that everybody is seeing it, but in some parts of town, the radar were showing some mixing. basically, a flurry, but is a little bit of rain, spoke cool train attaches itself to it and you get what looks like dip-n-dots. play old flurries dayton to middletown. greenhills, woodlawn, the potential is there for flurries mixed with what look like dip-n-dots falling from the

steady flurries from springboro and through lebanon. as you head out the door this morning, to about lunchtime today, plan on some flurries lingering. the wind continues out of the northwest for the first part of the day, watching lake effect snow bands keeping intact through northern ohio and make their way to wes. i the afternoon, the winds shift and that will no longer be an issue. right now, flurries, 30 one. clausen plays, temperatures not moving all that much. lunchtime, the flurries come to an end. 35 at 4:00. discuss girl tonight. that needs a cold start tomorrow. and even if you had out tomorrow morning and it is cold, i promise the weekend warm-up, 50' s and 60' s on tap. flurries this morning, any problems on the road? kyla: no problems. i think we' re ready for the warm-up. for those heading out right now, you can look forward to some pretty clear roadways.

the eastgate area. 32 looks good used out or westbound. 75 and mitchell, we dealt with construction earlier in the overnight hours. you can see we' re only -- we are rolling right along at or above the posted limit for these beads. here' s a look at 71 heading through parts of worn and butler county up along 71. things just running to get heavy, which happens around 6:00 in the morning. nothing out of the ordinary. we will keep you posted. mark: thank you. breaking news this morning, a gunman is dead after killing three people and wounding 14 more in a shooting spree in kansas. lisa: all of the dead and most of the wounded were shot inside a manufacturing plant in the town of hesston. eli rosenberg is there with the latest. >> the sheriff says a local police officer saved lives. he says that police officer, despite not having any back up, ran into the building, exchanged gunfire with the suspect, and

the sheriff adding as far as he is concerned, that police officer is a hero. now a little bit about where we are. hesston is a community of 3700. it seems like everyone knows someone who works at excel, so as word came out about the shooting, a lot of people came here searching for answers about loved ones. really gut wrenching stuff. now this is what we know about the suspect. according to a federal law enforcement source, 38-year-old cedric ford is being investigated as the shooter. the ceo confirms he did work at excel as a painter. now there are several different crime scenes here. the sheriff laid out a timeline, saying from the first shooting call to what happened here. it all played out in under 30 minutes. now hesston is a town changed forever. i' m eli rosenberg in hesston, now back to you. lisa: stay on top of this story throughout the morning, both on air and on the wlwt mobile app. happening today, the man charged

mother is expected in court. mark: dayton police arrested 34-year-old brandon carr earlier this week. he is accused of shooting and killing brittany russell. dayton police found her body two weeks ago inside a parked car. russell' s six month old baby girl was in the backseat and she was not hurt. carr will be arraigned this afternoon. lisa: new information about the investigation into the cincinnati va hospital and the claims of mismanagement. the department of veterans affairs is taking action against two top leaders after its investigation. the va says the director of ohio' s regional network, jack hetrick, is retiring after his proposed removal. while the acting chief of staff of the cincinnati va hospital dr. barbara temeck has been , suspended from her current duties pending further action. within minutes of the announcement, ohio congressman brad wenstrup, who serves on the house committee on veterans affairs, said veterans are thankful that the department of veterans affairs acted to dismiss a leader who has lost the trust of those he serves. mark: reforming the cincinnati

meeting later today. lisa: wlwt news 5' s andrew setters is live with what veterans and concerned residents can expect. andrew, good morning. andrew: good morning. expect the town hall meeting here at the millennium hotel to give people a chance to learn more about what' s been going on and going wrong at the va. this will take place a little bit later this morning. the group is bringing people together today, it is concerned veterans for america. they want to see changes made in the va, and they think that the problems that have been uncovered at our cincinnati va hospital highlight the problems going on nationwide. the problems at the va and also listening to people about their experiences. concerned veterans for america also wants to share information and find out how they can get involved in the efforts to reform the v.a.. the gathering today will take place starting at 11:00 this morning and run until 12:30 today here at the millennium hotel on 6th street downtown. reporting live andrew setters,

years to complete. lisa: back to the forecast. what is going on today? randi: it is friday. everybody is in a good mood to begin with. even though i' m telling you it will be called for one more day, everyone is focused on the well-timed warm-up. staying chilly today, maybe a couple of flurries through the morning. you can see where they' re coming from, off late michigan, lake enhanced snow flurries holding together and rolling through greater cincinnati and much of southwest ohio. none of them are very hefty but you can see they are steadier to the northern communities. from butler, warren, clinton counties, you are seeing some steady snow flurries, a little heavier closer to the norwood lateral. this little batch earlier was flurries, but it looked like dip-n-dots brabson' s batch right there. heading further south along the ohio, very light flurries falling along and south of the

15 students stayed up until 3:00 a.m. to see this little girl come into the world. her name is all-in and her mom, eve, paced around for nearly nine hours before she gave birth on monday. eve was boarded at the school to give the students the opportunity to witness the birth. mark: when it comes to geese, it turns out they can be a problem on the golf course. chesson hadley looked like he was picking a fight at the honda classic, and he went after the wrong goose. the bird threw up his wings and welcomed the challenge. hadley ran away and got back to golfing. watch it. watch your back. you better -- you better watch your back, powell. -- pal. lisa: i think the golfer started that one. randi: haven' t i watched "happy

lisa: here' s a picture. he is 38-year-old cedric ford. he used to work at the manufacturing plant where police say he opened fire. authorities say the shootings happened thursday evening at excel industries and hesston. there were random shootings in the plane' s parking lot and two other locations. witnesses describe the scene as horrifying. >> it didn' t' matter who it was. he had no specific target. he just -- shooting anyone who got in his way. >> we was already looking at him and he yelled and just went doot, doot, doot and then entered the building. lisa: the officer who shot and authorities have not yet revealed a motive, but yet another workplace shooting making many uneasy. mark: the ceo issued a statement saying, we' re sad by the terrific event and our heart goes out to all of our employees. will stay on top of this story throughout the morning both on-air and on the wlwt

accurate home, a deadly new reality in the heroin epidemic. there were 189 drug overdoses in the county alone the now accounts for nearly half of all death investigations. that is more than natural causes, homicides, and suicides combined. it is also 838% increase over the year before. -- it is also a 38% increase over the herbal for. lisa: today we will talk about how law-enforcement plans to tackle the problem. dan griffin is in springfield township with the story. dan: good morning. we' re expecting near more about the next steps in the battle against this deadly drug. this comes after the hamilton in county sheriff office says there have been fatal crashes involved with people who are suspected of using drugs like heroin. we have covered a handful of crashes recently involving

when earlier this week on 275 in northern kentucky. the driver was killed, a woman and baby thrown from the car. the sheriff is partnering with several to talk about what to do next. some topics including those billboards you see next to the highway and how businesses -- the sheriff' s office says it is important the public get involved feeding tips and information about suspected drug use, trafficking, and overdoses. they say all of this can make a big difference in the fight against terror one. we will be covering this of the day and bring it to you at noon. lisa: in northern kentucky, never to target her when users behind the wheel. ft. thomas police created a new heroin interdiction team to stop drugged drivers. the team started last week patrolling throughout the city 275 and 471. in its first week, the team wrote 32 drug charges, 19 related to heroin. these results are six times higher than the traditional

>> affluent communities, like the city of ft. thomas, aren' t exempt from it. no race, religion, gender, nothing is exempt. heroin has -- it does not discriminate. lisa: the extra effort is in response to the recent rise in heroin overdoses on the highways. mark: 16 people charged in a three-year drug investigation centered in harrison. police say the group was trafficking crystal meth between a gang in georgia, an outlaw motorcycle club, and people living in harrison. the investigation, which began in april 2012, showed the kilos of meth were being brought to harrison monthly. the 16 people are facing drug trafficking and drug possession charges. lisa: commitment 2016, a wild night in houston as the gop candidates faced off with a final time before voters go to the polls for super tuesday. mark: nikole killion has more. nikole: in houston

land of the beef, home of the deliciously different dave' s double. barker good morning and welcome back. big changes are on the way for the bunbury music festival. lisa: the three-day event is tossing tickets for something a little more advanced. wlwt news 5' s kyla woods has the details for us now kyla: we are already thinking warm thoughts when we think about bunbury, and yet at technology. some big names are coming to the festival this including the june, killers, elle king, and tears for fears. and festival goers will also notice some high tech upgrades this year. that will change the way you get into the festival and how you spend money there. instead of paper tickets, high tech wristbands will be issued. it will act as a credit card and your ticket, so you don' t have to carry cash into the festival. organizers say it should reduce
